TKA Seniors Score Big on National Signing Day


February 5th is a big day nationally for any athlete in the country hoping to play collegiate athletics at the next level.  The King’s Academy was blessed to have seven athletes in total commit to college teams by signing a national letter of intent on Wednesday morning.  The athletes who have signed are as follows:

Football:
Running back James Holland signed a letter of intent to play football at Colgate University.  James has been a three-year starter for the Lions and has led the team in rushing the previous two seasons. As a junior, Holland rushed for 1092 yards on 125 attempts, scoring 10 touchdowns. He also recorded 20 catches for 240 yards. As a senior, Holland again led the Lions in rushing with 651 yards on 98 attempts, scoring 9 touchdowns. Holland is a 2012 All-Palm Beach County Selection for small schools and was awarded All-American honors from the National Christian School Athletic Association.  James was selected to the 2013 All Palm Beach County All-Star Team and is a Lion Heart Recipient as well.

Fullback Garrett Larson signed to play football for Davidson College.  Garrett Larson has been a three-year starter for the Lions at Full Back and Linebacker. He has managed to be a leader and in the classroom as well as he has earned a 4.04 GPA. As a fullback Garret carried the football 70 times this season for 455 yards and 6 touchdowns. He was third on the team in tackles with 73. As a junior he rushed for 501 yards on 94 attempts, scoring 6 touchdowns. Garrett also started in all phases of the kicking game throughout the past three seasons. Garrett is a 2012 Second Team and 2013 Honorable Mention All-Palm Beach County player for small schools. Garrett Larson is a two-year captain and a two time Lion Heart Recipient.

Kicker Paul Schumacher signed to play football at Gardner-Webb University.  Paul Schumacher capped off a fantastic season by winning the 2013 Lou Groza Award for most outstanding kicker in Palm Beach County. Paul’s strong leg was on display throughout the season as he averaged 40.4 yards per punt and placed 98% of his kickoff attempts into the end zone for touchbacks. Furthermore, Paul was 4 for 7 on field goal attempts from 40 yards or greater, with his long coming from 50 yards out. Paul’s leg was not only strong, but also accurate, as he managed to connect on 7 out of 10 field goal attempts and made 97% of his extra point attempts for the season. Paul served as a leader for the Lions in play and attitude as his approach to team first football was easy to be spotted. Paul started every game the past two seasons not only in the special team’s category, but also in the defensive secondary as a Corner. He was a member of the 2013 Palm Beach Co. All-Star team and is a two time All-Palm Beach Co. selection for small schools.

Girls Soccer:
Makayla Barrantes signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Huntington University in Indiana.  “Mak” has been in the Lady Lions program for 6 years, been on the varsity squad for 4 years, and has served as a captain for two years. She has earned post-season honors from the Palm Beach Post and also earned the Coach’s Award in 2013.  Mak has been a member of two district championship teams for the Lady Lions.  Mak has also won the TKA Scholar Athlete Award and is a member of The National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta, the Math Honor Society.

Sarah Collins signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Stetson University in Deland, Florida.  Sarah has been in the Lady Lions program for 5 years and has been on varsity all five years – serving as a captain for two years.  She has earned first-team all-county honors in multiple years from both the Palm Beach Post and the Sun-Sentinel.  Sarah has scored 93 goals and had 44 assists over the last 4 years.  Sarah has also been honored as a member of the NCSAA Southeast Super-Region First Team and the NCSAA National Second Team.

Boys Soccer:
Travis Gonzalez signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina.  Over 4 years he has accounted for 30 goals and 48 assists.  Travis was a 4 year team captain and a 4 year 1st team all-area player in Palm Beach County.  Travis was also a player of the year candidate all four years at TKA.   Travis has been a big part of the best 4 years in school history as the team has won 2 district titles and had a record of 62-26-11 over that time span.

John Mattessich signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Mercer University in Georgia.  John has been a big part of the best 4 years in school history as the team has won 2 district titles and had a record of 62-26-11 over that time span.
