TKA Adopts Project Lead The Way (PLTW)
In addition to an already outstanding academic program, The King’s Academy recently announced that the school has adopted Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Launch (K-6th grade) and Engineering (9-12th grade) programs and will begin offering a rigorous science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum at the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year. PLTW is the nation’s leading provider of STEM programs.
With current projections indicating that more than 1.2 million U.S. jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math will go unfilled by 2018, the time to expand the engineering talent pool is now. Research clearly indicates the earlier students develop an interest in STEM, the better. Surveys show 65 percent of scientists and graduate students developed their interest in science in elementary school. Engaging students now builds confidence, grows interest, and sets them on course for strong accomplishments in middle school, high school, and beyond. TKA’s elementary and high school students will enjoy an engaging hands-on curriculum.
PLTW programs provide students with a track for success, whether they are interested in learning more about engineering or have decided to pursue it as a career. Students will learn to think critically, work collaboratively, and explore how math and science work in everyday life. Students engage in open-ended problem solving, learn and apply the engineering design process, and use the same industry-leading technology and software as the world’s top companies. They investigate topics such as aerodynamics and astronautics, biological engineering and sustainability, and digital electronics and circuit design, giving them an opportunity to learn about various engineering disciplines before beginning post-secondary education or careers. Through these exciting programs, students have the opportunity to prepare for the 21st century work place as well as gain college admission preferences and potentially earn scholarships for completed PLTW courses.
In addition to providing world-class STEM programs, PLTW provides ongoing, high-quality professional development training that equips teachers with the program content, academic framework, and instructive skills required to teach each PLTW course. PLTW schools also benefit from the organization’s engaged network of Fortune 500 companies, educators, and partners. School-based PLTW Partnership Teams complement the curriculum by recruiting local business and industry professionals to serve as mentors and share their real-world experiences with students.
“In today’s global economy, Americans are competing not just against each other but against their peers in countries like China and India,” said Vince Bertram, CEO of PLTW. “It is more critical now than ever for our education system to help students develop the critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to prepare them for the global economy.”
The King’s Academy has a reputation for excellence in all areas of school life and now through our partnership with PLTW we will successfully engage students in STEM subjects. TKA is proud to offer PLTW to students, giving them an advantage over their peers when it comes to high school, college and career readiness. We believe the community will also see the benefits of PLTW as the pool of highly-skilled workers for local businesses increases.
